“Hey, the chief wants to see you in his office,” my co-worker says as he drops by my table.
“What for?” I answer while typing on my computer. I can’t seem to get this goddamn document right, and I’ve been revising it for almost an hour. Shit!
“I don’t really know. But I heard that you’re partnered up with Greg… again,” he snickers. Asshole. I know what you’re thinking, you stupid excuse for a man.
“So tell me, does Greg enjoy your company because you’re good in solving cases?” His lips form a grin as he scans my body. “… Or because you’re good in bed?”
He pretends to whisper by placing his hand at the side of his mouth, but it’s still loud enough.
What a total dick, I can’t help but insult the man in my mind.
I ignore him as I walk to the office. Aside from feeling my short curly hair bouncing as I move, I can also feel my colleagues penetrating stares. I know what they’re thinking.
What a slut. Thinking so highly of herself when Greg is just with her because of her talent in bed! That must be a summary of what they think about me.
I sigh. Greg and I have been partners for years, and this is still what’s on the minds of other people. Being in the police force isn’t easy, so I learn to ignore them. Most people here are hot-blooded men, and they think with their dicks.
I lift my chin up as I continue to walk past them. I don’t really care about what they think of me. Instead, I’m using them as a drive. I just ignore them, and I have to prove that I’m better than each one of them.
My name is Kylie Jones, thirty years old, and a police officer. Not to boast, I’m a pretty hot black woman. A badass police officer at that.
I knock as soon as I arrive outside the Chief’s office.
“Come in,” he answers.
I immediately close the door behind me, blocking out those curious and lustful stares from the others. Well, not all of them are bad, though.
I sit down in front of him. He gets to the point immediately.
“There has been a case report this morning. A couple is running a couple’s retreat. There have been complaints that the proprietors are drugging the clients. And at night, goes into each clients’ rooms and steals their personal information. There is a trend in that, a lot of the new victims of identity theft had visited the retreat. But still, there is no proof,” he discusses as he pulls out a cigarette from his pocket.
“I want you and officer Greg to partner up in this case. Pretend to be a married couple and investigate. ASAP,” he continues.
“But chief, you know that I still have to take care of Geoff. I can’t be apart from him for too long,” I immediately rebut. Geoff is my only son, and I hate being apart from him for a long time.
“I know.” He heaves a sigh. “Don’t worry, this is only one weekend. I promise you it won’t take long, and I’ll make it up to you once you come back, okay? Greg has received the specifics of the mission.”
Well, I can’t really reject a case since it’s an order, directly from the Chief. I can only nod.
After our conversation, I go up to the rooftop. This is my usual place when I just had to take my mind off of things.
“Hey.” I immediately know the owner of that deep voice.
I turn around, and there he is- Greg Miller. The so-called 30-year-old God by every female in the police force because of his undeniably attractive features.
His sexy brown hair complements the color of his skin, like chocolate to milk. Deep blue eyes that make you believe that he sees right through everything. Those soft-looking lips that tempt me to jump right in. And that body, don’t even get me started on that embodiment of temptation.
“Hey! Are you even listening?” I’m back to reality when he slams the wall beside me and stares directly at my eyes with his brows, frowning.
Shit, Kylie! Why the hell were you thinking about his body?! Snap out of it!
“W-what were you talking about again?” I try my best to make it sound as normal as possible. But it sounds fucking terrible because of that slight stuttering.
“Are you high or something? We need to pick up Geoff now unless you want to stand there like an idiot,” he says. He places both of his hands in his pocket and walks out.
Damn, the man’s hot.
This man is really not a gentleman, but I know he’s a softie at heart. I wonder how he became my deceased husband’s best friend.
As soon as we pick up Geoff from school, we immediately drop him off to his grandparent
’s house.
“Mommy, is your trip going to take long?” my son asks me with his innocent puppy eyes making me feel guilty about leaving him.
“I’m just going to finish this case, and then I’ll run back to you as soon as I can,” I hug him tightly. I’m going to miss you so much, my baby.
“Geoff, how about we play some catch before we leave? What do you say?” Greg gives my son a wink.
“Yes!” he excitedly removes his bag and runs to position himself in the yard.
I just stand there while watching them. I hope that my late husband can see this. Ever since he died in the line of duty while I was pregnant, Greg was the one to fill up the father figure position for my son. Maybe he only takes care of us because he feels like he must protect us?
I smile as I watch them. Then, I join the boys for a bit. After that, I settle Geoff in with his grandparents as we get ready to leave.
I kiss my son before leaving and driving off to my place. I immediately pack all of my necessities and exits the house where Greg is waiting.
“You won’t pack yours?” I curiously ask.
“Don’t need to since it’s already packed.” He points at the huge bag at the back of the car.
Well, okay! He’s always ready for any type of urgent cases, alright. Before we proceed to the mission area, we go to the station first.
We bring some test strips, so we can test food and drinks for drugs before consuming anything later when we get to the retreat house. Then off we go to solve our case.

I’m driving the car we’ll be using for the weekend with a lot on my mind. It’s a 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata, something that already says we are a married couple in love. And that we have a pretty comfortable and favorable lifestyle.
This is the 10th time we’ll go to an undercover assignment together. But this is the first time we are going as a couple, a married one at that.
This will be weird, I can already feel it in the pit of my stomach. When Big Geoff died, I’ve been looking after Kylie and the baby. During that time, I’ve developed feelings for her. It will be hard not to betray myself while pretending to act all romantic with her.
This will not be a problem, though. If there is one thing I take pride in, it’s the fact that no one can tell what I’m thinking. I have kept my feelings for Kylie to myself for a long time, and no one in the precinct knows.
If there is anyone, except God, who knows about it, it’s little Geoff; the kid is pretty perceptive for a five-year-old. But Geoff has my back. I think. No, he definitely does. Probably. I sigh.
“Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins.” Kylie’s soft voice takes me out of my internal monologue.
“Does that make Geoff a Jenkins too?” I know she means it as a cute joke, but my heart can’t take it. She’s just too adorable when she smiles like that. Luckily, Kylie doesn’t read minds, so all she can really see is me driving like I normally do.
“You better not mention that we have a kid named Geoff, it’ll take more work to come up with a story if there’s a kid. Just remember that we plan on having a kid soon, but that’s it. If we do this, we have more liberty to do ad-libs on whatever details we can come up with while pretending to be husband and.” My voice doesn’t give my real thoughts away; it’s a valuable skill.
That’s right. Just make it about work, and you won’t have a problem with succumbing to your fantasies about the person you love. Damn, she’s sitting a few inches beside you in the passenger seat. I take a deep breath to calm myself.
This undercover married job won’t be an issue, I repeat this mantra in my brain.
I convince myself as I keep my eyes on the road and not on her beautiful chocolate-color skin. It’s exposed by the dress she’s wearing for our married couple debut.
“Shall we have pet names?” Kylie tucks a lock of her black curls behind an ear. Her piercing brown eyes focus on the case folder resting on her lap. I pull over in front of a fast-food joint, thinking of getting some of those greasy burgers and large sodas to-go.
“Pet names? Like what?” I try not to overthink it. For the mission, we pretend to be a well-off couple. We kept our first names but uses the last name, Jenkins. All of our identifications and credit cards said, Kylie and Greg Jenkins. We have fake social security numbers associated with those names.
“What about darling? Hmm… no, that’s too proper,” she says sweetly. If she calls me darling with that sweet voice, I think I’ll have a mild heart attack.
“Babe? Love? Honey? Gregy-poo?” Okay, now she’s just teasing. We’re actually great friends, so this is something normal between us now.
I give her a deadpan stare, and she responds with a chuckle. God, that’s too cute. How am I going to survive the weekend without accidentally confessing my undying love?
It looks like Kylie buys my serious look though, since she sighs and looks out the window from her side. Even her sigh is giving me palpitations.
“I’m kidding. I just wanted to mess with you a little. You always look like you’re so calm and collected with every assignment we have together.” Kylie closes her folder. “There has to be something that fazes you. I can’t be the only one nervous about these things.”
You have no idea, Kylie. Every case we have together, I feel like my heart will explode. But that’s the thing, I’m just impossible to read. People always assume I have my shit together. But if they can just read my thoughts, they’ll know that I’m head over heels in love with her.
But I can’t tell her that. I can’t tell her about my real feelings because of so many reasons.
STOP! Pause. Reel it in Greg. Don’t get too deep. What if you just really like her or feel responsible for her? Calm down. Even if you have feelings for her these past five years and it’s not going away, it still doesn’t mean you love her. So with that in mind, I shove all those feelings deep inside me and ask Kylie what she wants for snacks.
When we arrive there Friday afternoon, a preppy-looking couple comes out to greet us effusively.
We do our best to be enthusiastic. Then we settle to our rooms We find a couple of listening devices. Here, the walls really do have ears. This is proof enough. Next, we look for cameras.
The good news is there are no cameras here in the rooms. It will be terrible.
“I’ll just take a shower,” Kylie says, and I give her a curt nod. My mind is already on the assignment given to us. I’ve been thinking of ways to go about collecting more information first before making a move. I probably should make friends with the other couples in this retreat.
The sound of the shower takes me out of my thoughts as my eyes turn to the bathroom door. God help me, Kylie’s taking a shower... and she’s probably naked from head to toe.
She’s testing my limits!

I figure it will be hard to sleep at night knowing Greg is a few inches away from me. My heart’s racing and my back’s sweating. It will undoubtedly be a long night.
I’ve been with Greg for years in this line of work. He’s been my partner for a long time. I don’t want to easily spurn the notion of falling in love with him—that’s just going to be an absolute breach of my code ethics. But who am I trying to lie to?
Geoff’s dad won’t be angry at me, I’m sure of that. Knowing the man that he is, he’ll wish for my happiness and true love the most. Well, he probably knows how good of man Greg is.
I am in love with Greg for quite a time now. Believe me when I say that falling in love with him is inevitable. His brown hair complements him, and whenever I meet eyes with his blue ones, they entice me.
And that pair of blue eyes Greg owns transform into something sharp as if it could cut steel when he focuses on something—which I find so attractive.
Of all possible people my heart fell for, I don’t understand how it decided to be Greg. Sometimes, I question my sanity and heart. What makes him so suitable to enslave my sleeping heart?
As
ide from his looks... Greg’s a very kind person. A man who treasures my son and me. He’s the father figure of my son’s life.
I turn off the shower and walk to the sink. I open the cabinet and grabs a towel; it smells like April cotton. Someone knocks on the bathroom door, that must be Greg.
“Hey, Kylie, hurry up. I’ll go outside and ask for some drinks. Do you want to come? Only if you aren’t too tired?” asks Greg.
“Alright, wait for me,” I say, and quickly fix the bathrobe on my body. I dry myself, put on some lotion, and brush my hair.
As soon as I walk out of the bathroom, I see Greg sitting on the corner of the bed. He is fixing the buttons of the Prussian blue shirt he’s wearing. I like the fit on him.
“Want some help, Greg?” I ask as I walk towards him. He moved a little as I close the distance between us. Am I too aggressive? Maybe he doesn’t like me. Hah, why will I even think of advancing this relationship?
As I look at the bed which Greg and I will be sharing tonight, I can’t help but contemplate where I am standing in his life.
Does he look at me as a friend? Or will he think of me as a lover?
Why is it so hard to fall for someone who has been your friend for a long time? I don’t want to ruin our years of friendship and camaraderie.
He stands up and pulls the hem of his shirt.
“I’m going first. Take your time doing your thing. You can just follow me outside.” He smiles naturally as if he didn’t notice how steamy yet awkward the air in this room when I walk out of the bathroom.
